Indications: - otitis media with effusion in children - remove effusion - provide ventilation - restore hearing Procedure: - after myringotomy & suctioning of fluid from the middle ear, a small tube (tympanostomy tube) is inserted into the eardrum - myringotomy with insertion of tympanostomy tubes is most often performed on both ears Notes: - does not improve developmental outcomes at age 6 when placed for persistent middle ear effusion [1]
