trioxsalen; 4,5,8-trimethylpsoralen (Trisoralen)
One of two psoralens available in the US for use in PUVA treatment.
Indications:
- used in conjunction with ultraviolet light or sunlight for repigmentation of idiopathic vitiligo
- photosensitivity
- increasing tolerance to sunlight in albinism
- enhance pigmentation
Dosage:
- adults & children > 12 years:
- 10 mg PO as a single dose 2-4 hours before controlled exposure to UV-A or sunlight
Tabs: 5 mg.
Adverse effects:
1) common (> 10%)
- itching, nausea
2) less common (1-10%)
- dizziness, headache, depression, insomnia, nervousness, severe burns from excessive sunlight of ultraviolet exposure, epigastric discomfort
