Search
transient erythroblastopenia of childhood
Clinical manifestations:
- gradual onset of pallor
- complete recovery without sequellae
Laboratory:
- complete blood count (CBC)
- normochromic normocytic anemia
- blood hemoglobin generally 5-7 g/dL, but may be as low as 2 g/dL
- clinically insignificant neutropenia
- spontaneously resolves with onset of reticulocytosis
- peripheral blood smear
- normal erythrocyte morphology
- reticulocyte count
- iron studies if MCV is low
- cytomegalovirus serology
- parvovirus serology
Management:
- packed red blood cell transfusions for severe anemia
