transdermal therapeutic system (TTS, transdermal patch)
A method of delivery of medication.
Contraindications: Caution:
- do not cut reservoir patches
- Duragesic, Estraderm, NicoDerm
- MATRIX patches such as CombiPatch, Nitro-Dur, & some fentanyl generics may be cut...but there's no proof that the dose will be accurate
- transdermal patches containing aluminum or other metals in patch backing can overheat during an MRI scan & cause skin burns [4]
Pharmacokinetics:
- heat can increase drug release [2] -including sunbathing, heating pads, exercise, fever
Adverse effects:
- allergic contact dermatitis [5,6]
