Clinical significance:
- shows hyperechogenic lesions of substantia nigra & basal ganglia, thought to reflect iron accumulation, in multiple primary neurodegenerative diseases, including multiple sclerosis
- degree of substantia nigra changes at baseline predicts 2-year risk for progression of multiple sclerosis
