Indications:
1) coexistence of a 'cold' thyroid nodule in Graves disease
2) Graves ophthalmopathy
3) thyroid carcinoma
Complications:
1) inadvertent removal of parathyroid glands resulting in hypoparathyroidism with & hypocalcemia
2) hoarseness due to recurrent laryngeal nerve injury
Management:
- selective calcium supplementation [3]
