Etiology: - age-associated [2] - medullary thyroid carcinoma - multiple endocrine neoplasia II and IIB - multiple endocrine neoplasia IIB Pathology: - may be same as premalignant medullary thyroid carcinoma or carcinoma in situ Genetics: - inherited autosomal dominant form [3] Laboratory: - serum calcitonin - ret genotyping for medullary thyroid carcinoma
