Ablation of a region of the thalamus by sterotactic surgery. Indications: 1) relief of intractable pain 2) involuntary movements (tremor) 3) epilepsy 4) emotional disturbances (rare) Complications: 1) neurologic deficits are uncommon 2) undesirable personality changes are uncommon
