T helper 17 (Th17)
Function:
1) control of autoimmunity
2) generate & mobilize neutrophils
3) connect adaptive immunity with innate immunity
4) early defense against sepsis & necrosis following trauma
5) protection against bacterial infections
6) Mycobacteria, Borellia, & Candida all stimulate IL-17 expression
Expression:
- formation of Th17 cells is induced by cytokines TGF beta & IL-6
Pathology:
- role in autoimmune diseases
- mice lacking Th17 T cells do not produce IL-17 & are protected from autoimmune diseases
- arthritis that develops after infection with Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme disease) can be blocked by inhibition of IL-17
