T helper 17 (Th17)

Function: 1) control of autoimmunity 2) generate & mobilize neutrophils 3) connect adaptive immunity with innate immunity 4) early defense against sepsis & necrosis following trauma 5) protection against bacterial infections 6) Mycobacteria, Borellia, & Candida all stimulate IL-17 expression Expression: - formation of Th17 cells is induced by cytokines TGF beta & IL-6 Pathology: - role in autoimmune diseases - mice lacking Th17 T cells do not produce IL-17 & are protected from autoimmune diseases - arthritis that develops after infection with Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme disease) can be blocked by inhibition of IL-17
