transforming Growth Factor [TGF]-beta receptor complex
TGF-beta binding induces TGF-beta receptor II subunit phosphorylation & activation of TGF-beta receptor I (ALK5) subunit in most cells, resulting in autophosphorylation & phosphorylation of target proteins.
TGF-beta can also bind to and transduce signals through ALK1 (instead of ALK5). ALK1 is expressed predominantly in endothelial cells.
TGF-beta receptor II - ALK5 complex signals through smad2 or smad3. TGF-beta receptor II - ALK1 complex signals through smad1 or smad5.
Besides TGF-beta, other proteins that react with the TGF-beta receptor complex include FKBP12, TRIP1, STRAP & B-alpha subunit of protein phosphatase 2A
