temporal lobe
Pathology:
Lesions, clinical manifestations:
1) unilateral disease of dominant temporal lobe
- upper homonymous quadrantanopia
- Wernicke's aphasia
- impairment in tests of verbal material presented through auditory cues
- dysnomia or amnestic aphasia
- amusia (inability to name musical scores & to read & write music)
2) unilateral disease of non-dominant temporal lobe
- upper homonymous quadrantanopia
- inability to judge spatial relationships in rare cases
- impairment in tests of nonverbal visually presented material
- inability to recognize melodies & other nonlexical qualities of music
3) disease in either temporal lobe
- auditory illusions & hallucinations
- psychotic behavior (aggression)
- upper homonymous quadrantanopia
4) bilateral temporal lobe disease
a) Korsakoff amnesic defect
b) Kluver Bucy syndrome
- apathy & placidity
- increased sexual activity
- sham rage
c) cortical deafness
d) loss of other unilateral functions
