From the Greek technetos meaning artificial. Discovered in 1937 by Carolo Perrier & Emilio Segre The 1st artificially-produced element. Occurrence: 1) obtained by bombarding molybdenum with deutrons or neutrons & in the fission of uranium 2) found in the spectrum of S-, M & N-type stars 3) all Tc on earth is artificially produced Characteristics: 1) silver-gray metal 2) radioactive 3) tarnishes slowly in moist air 4) Tc-99 emits gamma radiation Uses: 1) Tc-99 is used medical imaging a) with sestamibi in myocardial perfusion studies b) bone scans 2) calibraton of particle detectors
