systolic blood pressure (SBP)

Blood pressure when the left ventricle is contracting, i.e. during systole. Pathology: - also see systolic hypertension - systolic BP increases throughout the 7th decade of life, but diastolic BP plateaus in the 5th decade - between-arm systolic BP difference of >= 10-15 mm Hg may be associated with a) peripheral vascular disease (HR=2.5) [2] b) increased cardiovascular deaths & all-cause deaths [3] - people with the lowest BP levels (90-114)/(60-74) mm Hg with the lowest risk for cardiovascular disease [4] - association of blood pressure with cardiovascular disease decreases with increasing age [4]
