also see NINDS Syringomyelia Information Page [2] & Syringomyelia Fact Sheet [2] Etiology: 1) Chiari Malformation type 1 2) spinal cord trauma 3) neoplasm Epidemiology: - occurs primarily in adults Pathology: - closed cavity wirhin the spinal cord Clinical manifestations: 1) weakness of hands or feet 2) analgesia or shooting pains in extremities 3) signs of upper motor neuron & lower motor neuron lesions may be present Radiology: 1) erosion of spinal canal 2) widening of interpedicular spaces 3) irregularity of articular surfaces & subchondral bone
