synovial membrane

The connective tissue that lines the cavity of a synovial joint, tendon sheaths & bursae. It consists of 1-3 cell layers forming a discontinuous surface overlying joint tissue & produces synovial fluid that bathes the joint. All surfaces of a joint are lined with synovial membrane except the articular cartilage of bones.
