Swedish Trial in Old Patients (STOP)

Patients: 1) 6614 patients, age 70-84 years 2) systolic BP > 180 mm Hg &/or diastolic BP > 105 mm Hg 3) random assignment of 3 groups a) beta-blocker or diuretic b) ACE inhibitor (enalapril or lisinopril) c) Ca+2 channel blocker (felodipine or isradipine) Results: 1) blood pressure declines in the treatment groups from a mean of 194/98 to 159/81 mm Hg 2) after 4.5 years, the combined endpoint of stroke or myocardial infarction were the same in all 3 groups
