protein sumoylation

Conjugation of a target protein with a SUMO protein (small ubiquitin-related modifier). The SUMO protein modifies an epsilon amino group of lysine in the target protein thus changing conformation of the conjugated protein. Sumoylation is reversible via SUMO-specific ligases & SUMO-specific proteases. Protein sumoylation has been implicated in: [3] 1) cell cycle progression 2) nuclear import 3) regulation of transcription 4) protein turnover (including the amyloid precursor protein) 5) sumoylation competes with ubiquitination
