Impaired oxygen & carbon dioxide gas exchange related to ventilation.
Etiology:
1) apnea
2) airway obstruction
Pathology:
1) hypoxia or anoxia
2) hypercapnia
Management:
- therapeutic hypothermia for perinatal asphixa [3]
- long-term sustained functional benefit through age 6-7 years
- not associated with a survival benefit
