SU.VLMAX study

Design: - 13,017 adults; - 5141 men, mean age 51 - 7876 women, mean age 47 - 7.5 years of follow-up Treatment: - antioxidant combination of: ascorbate 120 mg vitamin E 30IU beta-carotene 6 mg selenium 100 ug Zn+2 20 mg - placebo Results: - overall, no reduction in risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, or mortality - in men, significant reductions in cancer (RR 0.69) & mortality (RR 0.63) - in men in placebo group, cancer risk negatively correlated with baseline beta-carotene levels (RR for highest quintile relative to lowest quintile = 0.55)
