hordeolum (sty)
Acute infection of the eyelid.
Etiology: Staphylococcus aureus (most common)
Pathology: involves glands of eyelid
Clinical manifestations:
1) pain & swelling
2) pustule formation
3) some conjunctival irritation may occur
Management:
- eyelid hygiene (lid scrubs), warm compresses of the lesions for 10 minutes 4 times per day,
- erythromycin ointment or bacitracin ointment
- incision & drainage is indicated if the hordeolum is large or refractory to medical therapy
