streptozocin (Zanosar)

Tradename: Zanosar. Indications: 1) treatment of metastatic islet cell carcinoma of the pancreas 2) carcinoid tumor & carcinoid syndrome 3) Hodgkin's disease 4) palliative treatment of colorectal carcinoma Contraindications: Caution: 1) avoid aspirin 2) use electric razor Dosage: 1) may be injected by rapid IV push 2) dosage adjustment for renal failure 3) refrigerate & protect from light 4) discard refrigerated reconstituted solutions after 12 hours Powder for injection: 1 g Adverse effects: 1) common (> 10%) - nephrotoxicity (25-75%), nausea/vomiting 2) less common (1-10%) - diarrhea, hypoglycemia, pain at site of injection 3) uncommon (< 1%) - liver dysfunction, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, hematologic toxicity 4) other - may cause permanent sterility - may cause birth defects Drug interactions: 1) phenytoin 2) other potentially nephrotoxic drugs Test interactions: increases serum K+
