Epidemiology: 1) may cause disease or asymptomatic infection in pigs 2) sporadic infections in other mammalian species, including humans, after contact with pigs or pork products 3) median interval between exposure & symptom onset is 2.2 days, shorter for patients with toxic-shock syndrome Clinical manifestations: (3 presentations) 1) sepsis 2) meningitis, with or without a) disseminated intravascular coagulation b) coma 3) streptococcal toxic-shock syndrome Laboratory: - Streptococcus suis antigen - Streptococcus suis serotype - Streptococcus suis DNA Complications: - mortality 18%, 62% with toxic-shock syndrome
