cancellous, spongy, or trabecular bone (substantia spongiosa)
The central region of the epiphysis containing red bone marrow. Spicules of trabecula form a 3-dimensional latticework (cancellous). Interstitial space is filled with embryonal connective tissue or bone marrow.
