splenectomy

Asplenism is the disorder that occurs after splenectomy, or autosplenectomy. Indications: - spleen injury - *abdominal trauma with ruptured spleen - splenomegaly, hyperslenism - hereditary spherocytosis - immune thrombocytopenic purpura - evaluation of lymphoma Laboratory: - complete blood count - may improve anemia* * improvements in anemia may be associated with increased erythrocyte survival - increased erythrocyte survival may result in increased HgbA1c Complications: - see asplenism Management: - see asplenism
