spinal cord concussion

Etiology: - contact sports - player's neck is either compressed or bent far backward or forward with great force Pathology: - transient injury to the spinal cord that causes brief disturbance of sensation &/or ability to move Clinical manifestations: - paresthesias in hands & feet - weakness of extremities - brief paralysis may occur - episodes last < 24 hours, typically a few seconds Management: - see cerebral concussion
