A ring of smooth muscle surrounding the pupillary border of the iris. Innervation: - parasympathetic - preganglionic fibers - cell bodies in Edinger-Westphal nucleus - fibers carried by oculomotor nerve (CN III) - postganglionic fibers - cell bodies in ciliary ganglion - fibers carried by short ciliary nerves
