Sodium Phosphate Parenteral
Indications:
- hypophosphatemia, phosphate replacement
Dosage:
- dose based on sodium & phosphate levels
Injection:
- 3 mmol of phosphate/mL (15 mL)
- MUST BE DILUTED PRIOR TO ADMINISTRATION
Adverse effects:
- not common (1-10%)
- edema, hypotension, hyperphosphatemia*, hypocalcemia*, hypernatremia, calcium phosphate precipitation, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, acute renal failure [6], chronic renal failure*, seizures#
* phosphate toxicity can result in hypocalcemic tetany [3] & chronic renal failure [4,6,7] risk of acute phosphate nephropathy is low [5]
