a person's risk or actual loss of social resources, behaviors, activities, & self-management abilities to fulfill basic social needs [1,4] first proposed by Gobbens & others in 2010 [4] Etiology: - association between loneliness & social frailty among elderly - hearing loss may contribute to social isolation - negative emotions may contribute to social isolation - adverse effects of medications may have a negative impact on social frailty [1] - depression, physical inactivity, & weakness may affect social frailty [1] Epidemiology: - 24% of elderly worldwide [1] - 47% in hospitals, 18% in the community [1] Clinical significance: - physical frailty, cognitive frailty,& social frailty may be associated with poor health outcomes & to interact with each other [1,3] - social frailty has a negative impact on physical & mental health - compromised ability of self-care - depression in the elderly - increased mortality [1] Special laboratory: - screening for social frailty - Makizako Social Frailty Index (most widely used) - Social Frailty Screening Index - Tilburg Frailty Indicator Management: - early screening & intervention [1] - increase socialization - correct hearing loss - treat depression - physical activity/exercise as tolerated* * extrapolated from [1]
