sleeve gastrectomy

Indications: - morbid obesity Procedure: - laparocopic procedure - partial gastrectomy - most of the stomach's greater curvature is resected - technically easier than gastric bypass Complications: - avoids potential long-term nutritional deficiencies that occur with intestinal bypass - exacerbation of GERD (contrast with gastric bypass) [3] Notes: - more common than gastric bypass [4] - % weight reduction declines from 77% at year 1 to 56% at year 5 [5] - % of partial or complete resolution of type 2 diabetes declines from 93% at year 1 to 80% at year 5 [5] - % of partial or complete resolution of hypertension declines from 78% at year 1 to 55% at year 5 [5] - improvement in comorbidities is not correlated with the amount of weight reduction - sleeve gastrectomy preferred to gastric banding due to complications of band erosion & slippage [8]
