See: 1) sleep apnea 2) obstructive sleep apnea Etiology: - see sleep apnea & obstructive sleep apnea - risk factors in children [1] a) increased waist circumference (children) b) cervical adenopathy c) nasal turbinate hypertrophy d) nasal drainage e) chronic sinusitis f) long palate g) tonsil size not a risk factor - opiates (central sleep apnea) [4] Epidemiology: - minority ethnicity is risk factor - 25% of school children [1] Clinical manifestations: - snoring Special laboratory: - polysomnography may show hypopnea or apnea Complications: - elevated systolic blood pressure - increased risk of cognitive impairment or dementia [2] - increased risk of ischemic stroke & impairment of stroke recovery [5] - may be associated with accelerated aging [6]
