In dermatology:
- a macroscopic term referring a firm nodule or plaque that is deeper in the skin
Clinical manifestations:
- overlying skin may be erythematous, ulcerated or normal
- deep nodules may be palpable, but not visible at the skin surface
Special laboratory:
- skin biopsy
Differential diagnosis:
1) nodule with scale or roughened surface
a) wart
b) seborrheic keratosis
c) squamous cell carcinoma
2) flesh colored
a) cyst
b) acrochordon
c) neurofibroma
3) red or purple colored
a) erythema nodosum
b) hemangioma
c) Kaposi's sarcoma
4) yellow or orange: xanthoma
5) brown: dermatofibroma
6) hard nodule (any kind): consider malignancy
7) melanocytic nodule
a) nevus
b) melanoma
8) multiple skin nodules
- leprosy
