Tradenames: Mylicon, Gas-X, Phazyme.
Indications:
- relief of painful symptoms & pressure of excess intestinal gas
Contraindications:
pregnancy-category C but +
safety in lactation ?
Dosage: 40-125 mg PO QID.
Tabs: 40, 80, 125 mg.
Infant drops: 0.3 mL PO QID PRN.
Pharmacokinetics:
- elimination: not absorbed
Mechanism of action:
1) defoaming action which relieves flatulence by dispersing formation of mucus-surrounded gas pockets in the GI tract
2) alteration of the surface tension of gas bubbles, enabling them to coalesce; gas is freed is then eliminated more easily
