sialadenosis (sialosis)

Etiology: - unknown - may be due to inappropriate autonomic nervous system stimulation - may be associated with endocrine disorders (diabetes mellitus) - may be associated with nutritional disorders (pellagra, bulimia) - may be associated with medications (thioridazine, isoprenaline) Epidemiology: - commonly presents in persons 20-60 years of age - equal prevalence between males & females Pathology: - noninflammatory disorder - parotid acinar enlargement with hyperdense cytoplasmic granules Clinical manifestations: - bilateral parotid gland enlargement - soft, non-tender, bilaterally enlarged parotid glands Special laboratory: - tissue biopsy Differential diagnosis: - parotitis
