ALT is a more liver-specific enzyme than AST.
- elevations of serum ALT activity are rarely observed in conditions other than parenchymal liver disease.
- extreme elevations of serum transaminases seen in:
- acute viral hepatitis
- autoimmune hepatitis
- Wilson's disease
- drug-induced liver disease
- ischemic hepatitis
- Budd-Chiari syndrome
