serrated polyposis syndrome; hyperplastic polyposis syndrome

Diagnostic criteria: 1 of 3 criteria: 1) > 5 histologically identified hyperplastic polyps or serrated adenomas proximal to the sigmoid colon - 2 of these polyps must be > 10 mm in diameter 2) >= 1 hyperplastic polyp or serrated adenomas proximal to the sigmoid colon in an individual with at least 1 1st degree relative with hyperplastic polyps 3) > 20 hyperplastic polyps or serrated adenomas distributed throughout the colon [2] Genetics: - no genetic basis established Special laboratory: - colonoscopy surveillance yearly [2] Complications: - increased risk of colon carcinoma - no increased risk of extra-intestinal cancer - mean age of colon cancer diagnosis is 56 years [2] - incidence of colon cancer during 5 year follow-up is 7% [2]
