Tradename: Senokot. Contains 1) sennosides A & B 2) glucosides of rhein & chrysophanic acid Indications: - relief of constipation - irritable bowel syndrome Dosage: 1) 10-15 mL PO QHS 2) 1-2 tablets daily as needed, titrate to control 3) maximum of 8 tablets/day given as 2 tabs QID Tabs: 187 mg senna concentrate [4] Suppositories: 652 mg Syrup: 218 mg/5 mL Pharmacokinetics: - onset of bowel relief is 6-12 hours, but may take as long as 24 hours Adverse effects: - chronic senna use (> 4 months) may result in melanosis coli Mechanism of action: 1) mild stimulant laxative 2) contains a stool softener
