Etiology: selenium deficiency Epidemiology: 1) Keshan disease observed spreading in 1935 in rural areas of Heilongjiang province in northern China (1st reported in Keshan county) 2) Keshan disease affects mostly children & women of child-bearing age 3) endemic in rural northern China 4) widespread selenium deficiency found in all regions of the brains examined in patients with Huntington's disease [2] Pathology: - myocardial injury Clinical manifestations: - Keshan disease frequently occurs without warning - Huntington's disease? [2] Complications: - may be fatal Management: - sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) or selenomethionine
