Pathology:
- inherited metabolic defect analogous to Gaucher disease & other sphingolipidoses
- numerous histiocytes in the bone marrow containing cytoplasmic granules which stain bright blue with the usual hematologic stains
Genetics:
- associated with defects in APOE
Clinical manifestations:
- splenomegaly
Laboratory:
- complete blood count (CBC): mild thrombocytopenia
- bone marrow biopsy
