scoliosis

Lateral curvature of the spine. Scoliosis may be structural or functional. Classification: Structural scoliosis: 1) rotation of the vertebrae on each other 2) deformation of rib cage 3) structural scoliosis is accentuated when the patient bends forward Functional scoliosis: 1) compensatory for other abnormality 2) unequal leg lengths 3) functional scoliosis disappears when the patient bends forward Idiopathic scoliosis: [2,3,4] 1) occurs in adolescents 2) milder in course than other forms 3) generally resolves without intervention by early adulthood Genetics: - genetic variations in CHD7 are associated with susceptibility to idiopathic scoliosis type 3 Management: - back brace may be benficial [5] - not enough evidence to weigh benefits & harms of screening [3,6]
