Salmonella typhimurium

Epidemiology: 1) together with Salmonella enteritidis, the most common cause of non-typhi Salmonella illness in the US 2) associated with consumption of dehydrated foods, poultry products or pet turtles, ducklings & iguanas Pathology: 1) severe non-bloody diarrhea 2) septicemia in patients with AIDS 3) fever 4) may precede onset of Reiter's syndrome Laboratory: 1) fecal leukocytes generally positive 2) blood cultures in immunosuppressed patients 3) Salmonella typhimurium serology 4) Salmonella culture from stool Management: 1) supportive 2) antibiotics a) prolong the carrier state b) do NOT affect the course of the disease c) use only if blood cultures as positive
