Salmonella enteritidis
Epidemiology:
1) together with Salmonella typhimurium, the most common cause of non-typhi Salmonella illness in the US
2) associated with consumption of dehydrated foods, poultry products or pet turtles, ducklings & iguanas
3) 7 cases associated with raw almonds 2004 [2]
- almonds from Paramount Farmas, Inc. of Los Angeles, CA
Pathology:
1) severe non-bloody diarrhea
2) septicemia in patients with AIDS
3) fever
4) may precede onset of Reiter's syndrome
5) interacts with p21RhoG to induce cytoskeleton rearrangement & promote bacterial entry
Laboratory:
1) fecal leukocytes generally positive
2) blood cultures in immunosuppressed patients
3) Salmonella enteritidis serology
4) Salmonella enteritidis culture from stool
Management:
1) supportive
2) antibiotics
a) prolong the carrier state
b) do NOT affect the course of the disease
c) use only if blood cultures as positive
