Rev responsive element (RRE)

Recognition sequence located in the env gene of HIV1, present in unspliced or partially spliced pre-mRNAs (late transcripts) but not present in fully spliced viral mRNAs (early transcripts). Most viral proteins are translated from late transcripts which cannot exit the nucleus by the pathway used by fully processed cellular mRNAs. Protein Rev escorts late transcripts) out of the nucleus of virus infected cells via recogniton of RRE. The RRE is a 240 base-pair stem-&-loop structure.
