root filament (radicular fila, dorsal/ventral rootlet)

The small individual fiber fascicles into which the roots of all of the spinal nerves & several cranial nerves (hypoglossus, vagus, oculomotorius) divide in fanlike fashion before entering or leaving the spinal cord. Dorsal filaments: carry sensory information to the CNS Ventral filaments: convey motor information from the CNS to the periphery
