ristocetin cofactor activity

Clinical significance: - ristocetin-induced agglutination of platelets requires a cofactor found in serum - that cofactor is von-Willebrand's factor (vWF) Decreases: - von-Willebrand's disease Methods: - freshly washed or formalin fixed aggregation of normal platelets induced by ristocetin in the presence of patient serum is generally considered a sensitive indicator of vWF functional activity - less sensitive techniques involve platelet aggregation studies after direct addition of ristocetin to patient platelet-rich plasma. Specimen: plasma
