External & posterior to the peritoneum. The space between the parietal peritoneum & the muscles & bones of the lower back.
perirenal fat:
- derived from extraperitoneal fat
- continuous at the renal hilum
pararenal fat:
- external to renal fascia
- most obvious posterior to the kidney
