Non-pathogenic intestinal flagellates, infrequently seen.
Laboratory:
1) trophozoites
a) measure 4-9 um in length, generally 6-7 um
b) pear or oval-shaped
c) jerking motility
d) one nucleus, generally not visible in unstained specimens
e) 1 anterior, 1 posterior flagella
f) prominent cytosome extending 1/2 the length of the body
2) cysts
a) measure 4-9 um in length, generally 4-7 um
b) pear-shaped or slightly lemon shaped
c) 1 nucleus, not visible on unstained specimens
