reticular formation

Function: - a diffusely organized system of neurons in the brainstem reticular formation, subthalamus & intralaminar nuclei of the thalamus regulate alertness or vigilence - ascending connections with the cortex modulate behavioral responsiveness - descending connections with the spinal cord via the reticulospinal tract affect posture & reflexes - wakefulness, general brain activity, attention & vigilence are regulated by the reticular formation
