resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA)
Indications:
- abdominal bleeding or pelvic bleeding
- ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm
- severe gastrointestinal bleeding
- peripartum hemorrhage
Procedure:
- endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta
Clinical significance:
- lowers perfusion pressure to distal sites of severe hemorrhage
- increases afterload
- redistributes the remaining blood volume preferentially to heart & brain
