renal vein

Large veins formed at the renal hilus by merging of the segmental veins anterior to their corresponding arteries. The renal veins open at right angles into the inferior vena cava at the level of the 2nd lumbar vertebra (L2). The left renal vein receives the left suprarenal vein & the left gonadal vein. It passes through the angle between the abdominal aorta & the superior mesenteric artery where it may be compressed.
