Etiology: - months of continuous hyperglycemia (plasma glucose > 200 mg/dL) Pathology: 1) occurs when a patient experiences symptoms of hypoglycemia with a plasma glucose level > 70 mg/dL 2) may occur with plasma glucose as high as 120 mg/dL 3) hyperadrenergic effects 4) effect is diminishes with sustained improved glycemic control
